Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels has officially declared today as “Seattle Sounders FC Day” to commemorate the Sounders’ first playoff game! Catch the game tonight at 7pm on ESPN2. More info from the Sounders FC Blog.

After Saturday’s exciting 3-2 win, the Sounders clenched a berth in the MLS Playoffs, the first expansion team to do so since the 1998 Chicago Fire. Tickets will go on sale this Saturday at 10am PT via TicketMaster.com.
The Sounders will be part of the conference semifinals, a two game series that is decided upon by the final goal tally of each team. Here’s an explanation from the Sounders official site: Sounders FC will play at Qwest Field either October 29 or November 5. This semifinal would be a “home and home” series with the winner advancing on the aggregate goal total. A “home and home” is a two match series in which each team hosts a match. The team with the most total goals scored advances. The opponent is still undecided and will remain so until after the last games of the regular season which take place this next weekend.
Season ticket holders (myself included) have already had their chance to claim their seats for playoff games. Prices for each ticket are very similar to the prices of regular season tickets with a slight increase on each seat. The Sounders will most likely open up the top sections of the XBOX Pitch at Qwest Field, like they did with the Barcelona and Chelsea FC games, to allow more tickets to non season ticket holders.
Tickets went on sale at 10am today for the Seahawks 2009 season. Tickets are still available (at the time of writing this article) for all dates except the home opener. Seats are priced $49 and up. Tickets will likely sell out before the season starts, so visit Ticketmaster soon to purchase yours.
The first time I met Morgan Hepfer, I had just walked into my gym for a normal afternoon workout. He was there for the first time with his wife, Lisa and their baby daughter, Finley. Morgan is of average height, well-built, head shaven and heavily tattooed on the arms. His build is beguiled by a warm smile and very agreeable disposition. He and Lisa had just recently moved back to the Tacoma area after teaching English in Bangkok, Thailand. They went through our workout and I found that I was quickly dominated by Morgan’s work ability: Finley lay on a blanket for the duration, every now and then being checked on by her mother. It may sound strange to befriend someone so randomly at a gym, but I should explain that this gym is anything but typical. We were training (a word used here in place of “working out”) at Crossfit Pierce County, a gym owned by Eugene Allen, a local sheriff and former special forces member. At the time the gym was run out of Gene’s oversized three car garage. There were about 15 regular clients coming in at the normal workout time of 4:30 PM, any day you wanted to train. Not letting their December disappointment hold them back, The Mariners take on an old foe come May 11th — the Déjà Vu strip club. The team is attempting to use a 2007 city law – which prohibits adult cabarets within 800 feet of schools, community centers, and parks and open space – to block the opening of the club, citing that Safeco Field, Safeco Plaza, Edgar Martinez Plaza, and the Edgar Martinez Drive South overpass all fall under the realm of parks and open space. Those hooligans at the University of Oregon are up to it again – after playing a practice game in the nude, the team has had their season cut short by a ruling made by a university committee. The third-ranked University of Oregon team was one of the best teams in the country. This ruling was made with hindsight to other team offenses including under-aged drinking and speeding tickets. More from the Daily Emerald, the university’s student newspaper. The team’s website is here.
It’s a feat so rare in recent Mariner history that you may have to read it twice; three weeks into the 2009 MLB season, the Seattle Mariners hold first place with a solid 12-7 record. Thanks to steady batting and excellent pitching (we lead the American League with a 3.50 ERA), the Mariners are shaping up to be an excellent ball club. The most publicized player this season, Griffey, has yet to put big numbers up, but his presence is being felt around the clubhouse, and through increased attendance.
The big question is if the Seattle Mariners can keep it up. The current ESPN power rankings have the Mariners slotted in sixth. This is a big departure from preseason expectations, where one poll of ESPN employees had 18 people for the Angels winning the west, 3 for the A’s, and zero for the Mariners. Meanwhile, both the A’s and Angels are struggling and under 500.
The Mariners play the first game of a three game series in Chicago tonight at 5:11pm on FSN.
The Tacoma News Tribune reported yesterday that there were more than 1400 applicants for an opening as a water and electric meter reader in the city of Tacoma. The next step in the process was a test administered in the Tacoma Dome, where 807 people showed up to give it their best shot. Out of the test takers, 27 people were invited to interview. Finally one person, Scott Hoover, was hired for the job. The pay is around $20 an hour, with benefits.
Last night was a great moment for Seattle Sports. The Seattle Sounders FC won their first official game ever versus the New York Redbulls 3-0. At a time when the Sonics abandoned us and the Mariners and Seahawks continue to disappoint, Seattle has a new favorite team. Continue Reading…
