After a recommendation from my hairdresser Quint Eby, I decided to go check out Le Faux, a female impersonation and cabaret show at Julia’s in Capitol Hill. I was not disappointed. The show delivered non-stop highly charged dance numbers, over the top costumes, comedy, and sexual innuendo. The show plays weekly every Friday and Saturday night at 10 pm featuring a bevy of sparkling drag queens, cute dancers, an aerialist, and the unexpected.
The show does everything to the max as a good drag show should. The lighting, costumes, sound, and staging were dramatic and fun and the show moved along at a quick pace so that when the show ended at midnight, I could barely believe two hours had passed. Cocktails are reasonably priced from $6-$9 and appetizers are offered so if you have late night munchies you can eat, drink, and be merry during the show. The tickets are $20 each but were well worth it considering the entertainment provided and since the drinks and food aren’t expensive I only spent $40 for everything that evening.
Host Sean Paul brings a wonderful energy and high caliber performance to the show. He performs as Madonna, and does a show stopping number at the end of the show in, “What Makes a Man a Man,” in which he starts in full drag and slowly removes his costume, his wig, his makeup and transforms from a beautiful woman to a man before your eyes. Other highlights included a wonderful Cher impersonation a great Lucille Ball comedy act (performed by my aforementioned hairdresser), a fabulous Liza Minnelli, and a Britney Spears impersonator who looked so much like Britney that I could barely believe my eyes. In another great number, a drag queen emerges and sings a song in a sparkly dress and turns around half way through the number to reveal that the dress is low cut in the back, so low cut in fact that the entire performers buttocks are revealed.
I’d definitely recommend the show and it is a great destination for bachelorettes, birthday parties or other occasions if you don’t mind being called on stage during the show. Julia’s on Broadway is located at 300 Broadway E. and if this is not up your alley then check out their Vamps and Vixens show on Thursdays at 8 pm for burlesque. When not hosting shows, Julia’s is a full service bar and restaurant and is open from 8 am to 11 or 12 pm so go check it out!
