You may remember Mary K. Letourneau as the teacher convicted of raping one of her students many years ago. Letourneau and former student, current husband Vili Fualaau have once again popped into the public’s eye; the pair will be hosting a “Hot for Teacher” night this Saturday night at the Fuel Sports Bar. After a recommendation from my hairdresser Quint Eby, I decided to go check out Le Faux, a female impersonation and cabaret show at Julia’s in Capitol Hill. I was not disappointed. The show delivered non-stop highly charged dance numbers, over the top costumes, comedy, and sexual innuendo. The show plays weekly every Friday and Saturday night at 10 pm featuring a bevy of sparkling drag queens, cute dancers, an aerialist, and the unexpected. Continue Reading…
Just last night, Iron & Wine (aka Samuel Beam) graced Seattle with an hour and a half set at the Vera Project, an all-ages, all the time music venue. The show was intimate, well-planned, and highly enjoyable, in large part of Vera’s mission to transcend “commercial entertainment” and those hard-to-cross boundaries between the stage and the floor. The Lo-Fi Performance Gallery is a hipster night club and venue on Eastlake Avenue. I checked it out on a Thursday night and was impressed by the scene overall. There is a fairly large room in the back with a stage and some seating and a dance floor. In fact I was surprised at how big it is because from the street it looks like a tiny whole in the wall. There is a smaller loungy space with a small dance floor and a bar in the front and they have one of my favorite things in there- a photo booth! I absolutely adore photo booths – they can capture a series of moments like individual snapshots cannot and for me at least they are always hilarious and really show peoples’ personalities. Those who like burlesque or who are looking for a little bit of whimsical and naughty fun should like Through the Looking Glass on a three night stint at the Triple Door this week. The show features some of Seattle’s burlesque heavy hitters, Lily Verlaine, Babette La Fave, Miss Indigo Blue, Inga Ingénue, Kitten La Rue, Paula the Swedish Housewife and Waxie Moon among others. Like all good burlesque shows, Through the Looking Glass includes, dance, singing, comedy, puns, fantastic costumes, lighting and of course strip tease. Continue Reading…
For the dark beer enthusiast, The Atlantic Crossing in Seattle has one of the best pub tap selections outside of downtown.
I came here from the land of southern Illinois where the yellow beer thrives in dank, little college towns. The first time I visited this secret of Roosevelt, I knew I had found myself a new local watering hole. The great selection of dark beer on tap smiled at me from across the room as I entered the Crossing. Guinness, Boddingtons, Sam Adams…it was like watching a Victoria’s Secret television special, absolutely beautiful! Continue Reading…
Ballard’s Sunset Tavern has been holding its Kung Fu Grindhouse Triple Feature for four years, but it still feels like a fresh experience. Eager regulars line up chairs, still sticky with last night’s beer (hopefully that’s what it was), while a guy in an NES sweatshirt conspires with the bartender to develop an appropriately dirty-sounding drink special. They settle on Dragon Toe, whip up a grotesquely sexualized sketch, and then the movies start to role. Continue Reading…
Set back on Eastlake it took me awhile to actually find the Mars Bar, my destination for the evening. I didn’t know that Google Maps doesn’t take into account all of the one way streets you can’t take to get there. After screaming “son of a bitch” one last time at my steering column after approaching yet another street that would take me the wrong way, I finally called my friend Justin and asked for directions. True Seattleites can get around one ways just about anywhere, and Justin is a true Seattleite. Expecting to arrive around 8:30, with Justin’s help I finally arrived at 9:00. Continue Reading…
For lovers of metal, soul, rock, or a combination of the three, it is heartbreaking to learn that Pike Street’s King Cobra will be closing its doors this coming Friday. A tribute to the Kincora— which was shut down along with the Bus Stop, Manray and Pony— the King Cobra was a dynamic platform that allowed artists to share their talents with indulgent fans looking for a good time seven days a week.
